It has been 4 weeks already? Time does fly. Its as though it's stll the 2nd week.
After the 4 weeks , I learnt how important it is to evaluate and understand the internet when using it as a tool to search for resources online. One should not just take and go, but should back or evaluate to see if it is indeed reliable and can be trusted. The information are so wide, people can just trust the information blindly. This lesson taught me that evaluating can help me feel more confident when reading a source and feel very confident about it. Internet can be a wonderful tool to use, with alot of information lurking, waiting to be found, like a needle in a haystack, but internet can also be one that provides unreliable information. Patience to look for a reliable one is a must have when using it.
So that's the closure of the EIR lesson. Last module then off to Final Year

Day 12 Reflection-wiki
We're supposed to do a wiki for the topic of Online Advertising, Promotion & Soliciting. My group consists of Andi, Andrew, Jeremy Sim, Shakir and myself. Its so hard to meet up due to Chinese New Year. We planned on splitting up the work, where one person will take on one sub header, such as the introduction, advantages and conclusion. I'm doing the advantages of online advertising and soliciting and have used meta search and search engines to search for my resource. Different sources came out but I did manage to find a few. The sources I found consisted of those I would expect, but turned out some of which I did not think about was written, and it does make sense.

Day 11 Reflection-youtube?
Youtube? During lessons? Evaluate? That's unexpected.
Before I continue I shall reflect about class test 2 earlier. I didn't study much but I passed. Haha. But when I was going through my mistakes during the test, I somehow learnt some bits and pieces here and there.
From both tests, I start to realise that all 10 lectures are related to one another. Just like website to search for resources, you have to refer to all of them to get a clear and better understanding of the topic.
So back to youtube. Youtube is a video sharing service where the public can watch and share videos with the whole world. It has been a very popular site, due to its free surfing and registration and quick access to view what one wants to watch, from dance tutorials to research materials to president's inaugural ceremony to even online video diaries. It is an amazing site where millions of videos are posted world wide daily. There are competitions like dailymotion.com and metacafe.com, but youtube's user-friendliness and familiarity, as well as reputation, has topped it above its competitors.
The videos posted can be embedded on personal blogs and such, but, however, if the video is removed from youtube, it cannot be retrieved back and the video frame will remain empty.
Also if a user leaves his profile there, it is easy to access by anyone and if he or she is stalked, it is mainly his problem as he is the one who decides to post his information online.
Youtube, surprisingly and unknowingly, until I realised it today, is that it plays a big part of my life. I always access it at least 2 times a day, be it for entertainment like songs or research for projects. It is a very useful site, where people are hooked and it becomes a daily need. Researches can be done on youtube, such as if I were to research on HIV/Aids, there are video clips by professionals, some from television, posted so that the public can watch it again and again, with the ability to rewind and pause it. Also there will be personal videos, such as personal opinion about the topic through video means.
So that's youtube for you. You jus have to visit it when you get on the internet.

Day 10 Reflection
A continuation to yesterday's lesson, we had to choose a website which had to be evaluated on for the 2nd part of the portfolio. With the impact of HIV/Aids on youths as my topic, I chose a website that is about disease prevention and control. The website is user friendly and now I shall evaluate it and do my practicals.
Tomorrow is test day, and i haven't started on revisions, and I'm still suffering from fatigue from Final Year Project Interim Crit. Ganbatte to me and the year 3s who are taking FYP.

Day 9 Reflection-holiday and website evaluation
I did not attend class today as I had to be at the hospital, because my mum was undergoing a surgery on her jaw. Very tired, but I still managed to ask a few people around about what happened yesterday.
We were supposed to evaluate on a website that showcases on my dream holiday.
For this exercise, I have decided to evaluate on http://www.visitmaldives.com/. Maldives had been my dream holiday ever since my friend was sent there for Overseas Internship Programme.
The website is user-friendly. It is a tourism website that provides a lot of information about maldives. Links to where user need most, like places to stay, photo gallery, and activities they can do, are offered there.

I chose Maldives because the place is very nice and wonderful, with clear open water that are so blue and the beaches are white and clean. Its a must go destination.
The most important criteria i used is presentation to get the information. The layout and appearance gives a, rather first-hand virtual feeling about how the place would be like visually on the computer screen. The simple, useful and yet bright website is attractive enough to make me feel eager to go there for a holiday
Evaluate the website/s and identify the most important criteria you used to get information about your Dream Holiday.

Day 8 Reflection-blogs and internet searching problems
And today we learnt that we have yet another test on Friday. Help? Today's lesson was about how some websites can be ineffective and the problems faced. I faced all the problems before, in fact. And the problems are effecting how people work.
I am using the criteria of purpose to evaluate the website. I chose that criteria as the site has a purpose, and its purpose is to insult in an entertaining way. All the posts and links lead to entertaining posts or games even. Despite the insults, people will still view the site as a mean to loosen up and laugh at what is happening to their own country.
The site has been known to many Singaporeans, and is rather sustainable as it contains posts of freedom of speech, in which the topics are mainly common among the viewers.
If i were to read the posts as the Singaporean Prime Minister, I would be very shocked and disappointed as most of the entries are insulting the government. But as the Prime Minister, I should not sit and curse, but I should, as a leader, reflect and try to find solutions that would appeal both the people and me.
If i were to read it as a Singaporean, which I am, I can read it from 2 points of view. If I were a patriot I would feel very insulted and leave comments to vent anger on the one who posted it. However, being a normal Singapore citizen myself, I get amused by the topics and sometimes agree to what he has to say, while some are just nonsensical jokes. However, I would feel rather embarrassed as people from overseas who read this would get a bad impression of Singapore.
Lastly, if I were to read is as a foreigner working or studying in Singapore, I would feel insecure as the country I landed myself in has such problems. It depends on the situations on how I would act.

Day 7 Reflection-invisible web gateways
Test DAY. The day before i browsed through the lecture notes quickly and thank god I could memorise most of them. And the questions were rather tricky. But good thing i did quite well in the test.
Today we used invisible web gateways to search for one resource. I used Complete Planet to search for the resource and it the site looked similar to that of a subject directory. It had categories to choose from. The page is simple and the search tab has special functions. After i keyed in my search requirement, i could choose if I wanted to search as a Boolean query, all of the words, any of the words or search it as a phrase. It helps me specify the type of search I want. It finds databases with highly relevant documents that cannot be crawled or indexed by surface web search engines.
Like the Meta Search Engines, there are not much resources listed. The lists, however, shows how relevant the page is.
The invisible web has limited results, and is neither as good or as bad as search engines, as there are pros and cons. The results have to backed by other resources.
I will still use the invisible web to search for resources, but there is probability that I have to use search engines for resources to back it up.

Day 6 Reflection
Tomorrow is test day. 2nd test for this first time since secondary 4 O levels. Wish me luck. Oh and while reading through the lecture notes, I realised how useful and different the functions of each site were.

Day 5 Reflection-the meta search, the directories & the database
Today was about invisible web. We learnt about Invisible Web Databases. It is something new, like meta search and search directories. Ever since last week's lessons, i realised that using Google alone helps, but by using Meta Search engines and such can help widen the search and make your search more effective.
Some Databases are free, while some needs to be paid if one wishes to access. Its like a book where you have to pay to buy and read it, only that this one is online. An example of a database is actually the TP Digital Library Portal. After 3 years and now I realise what it is.
Meta searches engines, like http://www.mamma.com/, is simple, and only contains the search bar. When the advanced search is clicked on, it shows that it uses a few good search engines to find the resource. They use many search engines to widen the search.
Subject directories, on the other hand, like http://www.go.com/, similar to that of http://www.yahoo.com/, provides a list of directories that lists out different categories, which can help to narrow down the search. They also serve as an online catalogues.
There are pros and cons to both. Meta-Search Engine has a wider search, and is useful especially if its for global searches. Subject Directory is narrower and can be narrowed further, and it can help find a specific result if available. Both can provide useful searches and are easy to use. However, Meta searches search using many search engines while search directory only uses its own search engine. Meta searches cannot be narrowed down to a specific category like that of a Subject Directory.
Both provide different search results and have their own advantages and disadvantages. However, I would prefer the Meta search, as most of the results are relevant and useful. Although the Search Directory lists out a lot of results, not all are as useful. Meta search is wider and has a whole range of results which are useful from the different search engine it uses.
The benefits of using different search engines are such that each has their own strengths and usefulness. One can search a specific resource while one can search a lists of results that can be used to back the main one. By using all the search engines together, the results compiled would be very much effective and relevant.
Site feeds, or links, is useful. It is an easy , and fast access to a linked site, as one need not type the address. Also by doing so, people who visit your site can access to their site as well. It works as a publicity and awareness of a site, as when you link one up, people will tend to feel that it must be a good and useful site or one that is related to yours.

Day 4 Reflection-discussion forums
Its a Tuesday, and its also the supposed day of FYP crit, and therefore due to insufficient sleep I feel very drowsy now. Nothing was done much today, only that it took a lot of time. Because I had been a very good and hardworking boy, I finished Practical 3 last week, and all I had to do today is collate the sites and compile them and use the method of APA citations. I have been using APA citations for most of the modules, so this one is much of a refresher. Only that this one I managed to figure out to cite from forums and blogs. They are very useful and act as a reference list which can be accessed anytime.
In APA Citation, it mainly contains the writer's name, the title of the article, date retireved for some, and the source. It helps prevent copyright infringements.
Also today we have to participate in a forum. I am using the forum, Topix, under the discussion category of HIV/AIDs. To my surprise the forum has a lot of topics and discussions regarding HIV/AIDs. Some of which are asking for help, some of which are writing about what the government is doing, and some of which are about guidelines to help those who have quiry with HIV/AIDs.
The forum members reply at the posts and try their best to either help or state their point of view. The forum, however, do not have much discussions regarding impact of HIV/AIDs on teenagers, but have alot of discussion topics regarding that on countries such as Africa and also on adults. I felt nervous about participating in a forum at first, but soon it felt comfortable as I realised that everyone here are strangers who are helping other strangers. The forum is indeed useful to a certain extend, as possibly there are alot of discussion topics around and not everyone knows of the discussion topic posted.

Day 3 Reflection-search engines and boolean operators
3rd lesson for the week, and today was quite an interesting day, because I learnt how to narrow down searches on the search engines and find the specific topics I am looking for. At first I thought that I knew everything about search engines and how to search the internet on the search engines and thought that this lesson is redundant, but once I did the practical and tried it on the search engine, I was stunned to see that it really works. How cool is that?
The simple bracket or stars and the words "AND" and "OR" can help filter out unecessary search results and help you attain and find what you are really looking for.
Also today I learnt about the existence of the search engine, Google Scholar. It serves a different purpose than Google. There are pros and cons to both sites.
Google searches any documents containing the search topic, and the materials are from anywhere, such as blogs, forums and such, and also even videos, while Google Scholar searches full text documents and materials and shows results of journals from professionals and experts, and it covers more websites.
In Google, Not all the results listed are relevant, and the list is long and some contain irrelevant topics. Google Scholar shows results which are very much relevant and the results show those that are professional.
Google lists out any sites that contain the topics, and lists them out in different formats, such as videos and media, but not all the results are reliable and not all the results are necessary.
Google Scholar, on the other hand, is more reliable as the results are those that are written from the professionals and experts, but does not list out personal sites that give out personal thoughts or discussions, which might be useful, especially if you are searching for problems within public.
Both search engines are effective in helping me find my resources related to the topic. Google lists out results which vary from personal to professional entries. Google Scholar narrows it down to professional entries. There are pros and cons to both search engines, but they are very much useful for my research. Google can list out results that can personal, and from this I can find materials which are relevant when I need to search for problems and personal feelings of people. Google Scholar lists out those written by experts and is more reliable, especially if I need to research on numbers and expert experimentations

Day 2 Reflection-online shopping
Today we did a practical of how to search for materials online. I learnt that you need not write down the full phrase in search sites. It saves time and focuses on the key searches.
Also we were to do the module, what I would buy if I had $500. $500 is alot of money, and its the I have never done online shopping before, but I did watch my friends do it. Online shopping is a convinient method to shop, and is a good publicity material for the company. Researching plays a part in online shopping, as users need to search for the products they would want to buy, and some similar products, or maybe better, can be found on other sites.

If i had $500 and were to buy goods online, these are the items i would buy:

All the items come from Nike.com. Basically, and clearly I am a fan of Nike products, as they are comfortable to wear. Nike has many branches in the world, but not all the shops have the same products. By having an online shopping store on their website, people can buy the products anywhere and at anytime, which is more convinient for consumers. Having online shopping store is also good publicity for them and their products.
The purpose of this website is for business and marketing and advertising as well. It serves also as an online catalogue, only that it is well maintained and always updated.
The website features links and quotations and latest news of the product they are selling, such as the new products or products which are on clearance sale. The special functions of the website is that the products can be specially customised to the consumer's creativity.

Day 1 Reflection-intro day and the 4 resources
Frankly i wasn't looking forward to class because i haven't had any morning classes since 4 months ago. But knowing that this is the last module i'm going to take, I decided to pull myself up. I was quite surprised that the class was full of students from PID, and a few IMD people. At least I don't feel awkward in class.
First lesson was, ookay, and I got lost on the first assignment. I had to ask around and luckily i was saved and started to do my work, but still rather shakey and not confident. But from today's lesson, I think that for the next 3 weeks, it's all going to be me and the computer.
I'm still rather, shocked by all the information put up on Ole-bb, and that we have to use it, cause we are not used to Ole-bb, at all. Well maybe we used it once in a while, but still. I'm keen on passing, so i shall persevere.

Basic Introduction
Hi, Hakim in the house. A year 3 student in Temasek Polytechnic Design School, and pursuing in Diploma in Product & Industrial Design. It's my last year in school and I'm having mixed feelings about graduating soon.
School has been, a KILLER, but other than that school has been fun, and its all about the people you meet in school. I'm an active camper, especially in Orientation Camps. Making feel alive and welcome has always been a passion and something fun to do. It only comes once in a lifetime.
I love having fun, and im always smiling and laughing.
